Did you know that the history of resorts in Estonia began in Saaremaa in 1824, when Carl Friedrich von Buxhoeveden, the lord of Rootsiküla manor, opened the first mud spa near Kihelkonna? The first mud spa in Kuressaare was opened in 1840. Kuressaare, which was known as Arensburg at the time, was one of the three famous resorts in Estonia, where wealthy industrialists, merchants, and military personnel from Europe and the Russian Empire could be found in the early 20th century. It was also a vibrant gathering place for renowned Estonian creative individuals such as Koidula, Tammsaare, Haava, Visnapuu, and Gailit. The significance of Kuressaare as a resort town and the powerful healing properties of mud treatments is evident from the fact that there were consulates of Germany, Sweden, Finland, and the Netherlands in the city.
